two bright spots in a dreary 60th emmy awards

Is it just me, or have awards shows completely lost their magic? The Emmys last night were just depressing. It could have been the lame humor, the five(!) hosts, or the fact that The Office and Weeds got completely jacked. It could also be that I'm a movie girl, so the TV thing didn't really speak to me.

Whatever. It was a crappy show. Except for two things:
  1. Josh Groban's TV-theme medley. It had the potential to be corny--OK, I guess it really was corny. But I lurved it.
  2. Mr. Sexalicious Paul Giamatti won his first Emmy for his masterful portrayal of John Adams in the HBO miniseries of the same name. So well deserved. (Everyone else connected with John Adams seemed to rake 'em in as well, but I only had eyes for Paul.)
Even so, I'm skipping the Emmys next year. Unless Justin Kirk gets nominated. (I met him last week, by the way. More on that to come.)

I think what drives me especially nutty about The Emmys is how they tend to land on a darling and keep awarding them year after year after year after year...

ie - While I love him, Jeremy Piven is going through that now.

Even the nominees are amazingly predictable (Boston Legal? Monk??). The TV academy needs to shake things up if they want to keep people's interest.

After last year's snooze fest where Ryan Seacrest thought it imperative to point out every 10 minutes that everything in the awards was "green," I thought I'd just skip it all together this year. And I almost made it. I caught the biggie wins in the last 30 minutes and that was enough for me. I spent the rest of the night watching reruns of The Office, much more entertaining.

I haven't watched a TV show in about a decade, so I obviously missed The Emmys, but I still find it as frustrating as you that I could have correctly picked the winners based on buzz and word of mouth alone.

I saw about five minutes of the Emmys, but thankfully, those minutes included seeing Don Rickles get onstage. The man still has it - his dig about his wife on the beach was priceless.

Did awards show ever have any magic? For me they've always had all the same appeal as political conventions. Time to turn that dial....ooooops, dated myself.....I really meant 'grab the remote'
