to rate or not to rate
I'm thinking about implementing a rating system for my movie reviews. I've seen all kinds of great rating options around this blogosphere of ours... or, should I just keep my reviews the way they are? Please let me know what you think. There's a poll on the right, or feel free to leave a comment with any other ideas.

I don't do a rating system for what few reviews I do; maybe if I did more, I would ... it's hard to boil down a complex film (or my reactions to it, anyway) into 4 or 5 stars or popcorn bags or ...

I agree, Rick. It is pretty difficult. And I've been a bit nervous that people would just look at the rating and not read the review.
I like the approach of Daniel at Getafilm. He lists what he loved, what he liked, what he disliked, and what he hated. Much better for a complex film (as most good films are), but it requires a full read-through.

Ha - thanks! Yeah my reviews aren't so much the quickest reads, but it's a model I've found works for me at this point. I've actually now reviewed a couple of movies without doing so and it feels a bit freeing. But, at the end of the day, I know I started mine for a reason and I'll continue to do the long ones for the most part. That reason was that I felt like most reviews were too wishy-washy - there was no objective scale to explain how they got to a certain number of stars. Mine's not perfect, and of course there is subjectivity built into it, but I feel like my reviews are pretty accurate when I look back months later, like "oh, yeah, that's why I didn't like that."
I don't know, it's all a personal decision. I say go for it if you feel like it - you can always change. This is your blog, after all!
